Introduction

Sure, I’ve done a few stints of hunting for better gear in Diablo III, trying out my various builds, and constantly telling myself “just one more Greater Rift will be enough.” Never happens. There is always, always, another legendary item to seek, another set of skills to attempt, or another class which suddenly seemed way cooler than my current character.

Diablo III may seem fairly straightforward at first. In that action RPG rhythm of fight, loot, power up, fight again and while the initial loop is, and always will be, simple, things really take off when you begin exploring different builds and experimenting with Seasons.

What Diablo III Is

Diablo III is an action role-playing game set in the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary, focusing on fighting hordes of monsters-devils and undead alike-in a bid to save humanity. The game combines fast paced combat, a deep character progression system, a huge amount of loot with randomized stats, and a whole host of different abilities and items.

Each Diablo III has one of seven different class options-the Barbarian, Crusader, Demon Hunter, Monk, Witch Doctor, Wizard, or the Necromancer. They are distinctly unique not just in look but, crucially, in feel, style and abilities. What one character class can do can, usually, not be done by another.

You can tackle a story based single player campaign, or play the much more loot and end game focused game modes such as a full-blown adventure mode that throws you and others into bounties and Rifts as a way to hunt down better gear.

This is what Diablo III thrives on.

How the Gameplay Works

Really the idea is simple. You play a hero from the different classes mentioned, descend in Sanctuary, fight monsters, pick up items, get more experienced in skills and stats, and create a character tailored toward your ideal build or style of fighting.

There is a real-time combat where you have full control over the movements, defenses, and offensive capabilities. You use your skills and attacks, with both physical, elemental, ranged, area of effect or close combat options depending on your skills. Combat in Diablo III sometimes requires simply just whacking everything to death. Some enemy types will require careful maneuvering and an understanding of attack types you have and that they can damage.

Items are integral to how your build can develop, with equipment that range from simply stronger physical items to gear, including sets that have various bonuses and affects tied to abilities that completely revolutionize them. Weapons to body armor and leg plates to gloves and rings… Your equipment needs upgrading, even a seemingly pointless find could give you a large benefit over the items you currently hold.

Once you begin to become powerful, higher difficulties and more challenging game modes may become available.

Diablo III is enhanced further by playing seasonally, starting from fresh on a new season, and climbing the ladders or getting special objectives and unique items from completing content which helps the game feel fresh, even with old builds. This is likely one of the most enjoyable things about Diablo III, it gives you a reason to want to restart without making it feels like it isn’t worthwhile.

Benefits of Playing Diablo III

One of the biggest benefits to Diablo III is how fast you are thrust into actual gameplay. You won’t have to spend any time running around your hometown making sure that you are fully equipped because that just won’t work. Just select a character and go!

Also progression, I feel, is the most enjoyable thing about Diablo III, because what you’re doing can very easily and sometimes directly help you. Killing enemies not only gets you experience and loot, but those legendaries can give your current builds huge buffs or can totally alter your attack methods. The best part about some of Diablo III’s gear-sometimes it can feel very small on stats but for example a 5-10 percent increase in mainstat or vitality for specific gear types could improve an entire build’s output.

It doesn’t feel frustrating because there is a surprisingly large amount of freedom in how you decide to build your character. You can choose a direct melee fighter, a long ranged attacker, a summoner build, or an area of effect style. You could even go for a specialized combination of build parts based around the strengths and specific legends of the item or skills you pick out.

It will seem strange at first until everything all starts fitting together.

You’ll never feel like you’re stuck to one style of play, so even if it stops being fun, there’s always an alternate play style for your chosen character which is more fun, you’ll just have to discover it.

And all of this can also vary between how much time you spend playing, an hour of casual play could give you many opportunities or you can spend your entire day trying to improve on a Greater Rift for hours on end.

• Completing a story run through the campaign of Diablo III, experiencing the narrative along the way.
• Trying out new character classes and getting them geared up before entering into some advanced content.
• Farming a specific type of legendary, or refining a current build with slightly better items and effects.
• Running for regular Nephalem Rifts.
• Pushing high-level Greater Rifts for fun or competition.
• Working your way up in Diablo III’s different Adventure Mode activities.
• Working your way up a new character throughout a season.
• Teaming up with friends for some light-hearted farming sessions and challenging dungeons together.
• Creating a completely unique and unorthodox skill combination for a weird build of your own.
• Trying to improve your personal score or become more powerful than other players in leaderboards or solo sessions.
• Once again booting up your old character when you need to grind for some satisfying kills against a varied world.

Final Thoughts

Diablo III is a truly enjoyable game in many ways and it can be quite challenging but not in a frustrating manner in most parts of the game, especially with certain builds and items which feel incredibly overpowered once set in motion. The controls may be a bit tricky sometimes on PC at first but you will get used to it soon enough. And the loot… The gear keeps it interesting so that there are always opportunities in any stage to obtain greater gear or to tweak your current build and that will keep many players interested in playing their particular build or item sets to push the very limits.

As you start experimenting even more through skills and other items on the same build you were using so then it gets even more interesting and can often lead to more powerful outcomes with that verysame build.

One feeling I will always have after finding some extremely decent loot from a drop, even when looking through it to sift the good from bad, is wondering if some new legend may change it. They sometimes do. And sometimes it’s just junk. Such is a great element of any Diablo game, which I must say can also be part of the fun!
